Our College

Bishop Benziger College of Nursing, established in 2004 by the Latin Catholic Diocese of Quilon (Kollam) under the able leadership of Most Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman, the Bishop Emeritus of Quilon, upholds the motto: “To Love is to serve”. This institution is one of the well-established Colleges in South India which aims at preparing professional nurse graduates who are competent to render quality care to patients in all settings. It is an associate institution attached to Bishop Benziger Hospital, a 600 bedded Super Speciality NABH Safe-I certified hospital. The College offers Bachelor Degree, Master Degree and Doctoral programme in Nursing. It is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and is recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) and Kerala Nurses & Midwives Council (KNMC).

Bishop Benziger College of Nursing now proudly stands as the first institution under KUHS (Kerala University of Health Sciences) to receive Quality Accreditation with A+ grade. It is the second Nursing Institution in the whole of Kerala that received Quality Accreditation from the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). It is still accredited in Cycle 2. The College is also placed by KIRF (Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework) in the 4th Rank Band among Nursing Colleges of Kerala. BBCoN (Bishop Benziger College of Nursing) is Member of United Nations Academic Impact Program and an approved Research Centre of KUHS.

The Name

Arch Bishop Aloysius Maria Benziger
-Patron of Nursing Profession in Kerala

Bishop Benziger was born in Einselden in Switzerland on 31.01.1864 and was ordained as a Carmelite Priest on 22.12.1888. Arrived in India as a Missionary in 1890 and became Bishop of Quilon on 14.9.1905 and established many Churches, Schools and Convents.

He brought trained Nurse Nuns of Holy Cross Order from Menzingen, Switzerland to serve in Govt. Hospitals and to train native nurses as per the request of Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, the then Maha Raja of the Kingdom of Travancore who described Bishop Benziger as the most holy man in his kingdom.

Bishop Benziger died on 17.08.1942 and was declared Servant of God on 12.10.2018. In Memory of Arch Bishop Aloysius Maria Benziger, Bishop Benziger Hospital (1948), Benziger School of Nursing (1971) and Bishop Benziger College of Nursing (2004) were established by the Diocese of Quilon.

Philosophy

Health Care Philosophy of Bishop Benziger College of Nursing is basically founded on the Christian Doctrine of “To Love is to Serve” – Our inspiration is Christ, the Healer who sent his apostles out to continue the ministry. The management is fully geared to implement this philosophy of caring in the field of health care. College of nursing believes in rendering quality education in the field of nursing with a view to prepare competent and caring Nurses. Management and the staff do not discriminate any students who approach us for service on the basis of race, caste and status. Any student who is in the need of education in the field of nursing is our guest of honor and is welcome.

Goals

To provide students centered quality education to equip them with application of relevant knowledge from humanities, biological and behavioral science in carrying out health care. To make a qualitative contribution to health care through training of personnel who are dedicated to healing ministry. To prepare nurse as a minister at altar of human life, with upholding respect for human life from the moment of conception to the natural end. To promote team spirit to deliver comprehensive holistic health care.

Objectives

To help the students acquire knowledge of theory and principles from humanities, biological and behavioral sciences to carryout individualistic health care. To provide quality nursing care to clients at various settings such as hospitals and community and other health care agencies irrespective of religion or caste, particularly the less fortunate. To promote problem solving and evidence based practice through research activities. To help students to practice genuine feeling of compassion, indiscrimination and ethical values in their personal, professional life. To provide over all development of students with special emphasis on intellectual, cultural psychosocial and spiritual aspects. To motivate and cultivate leadership qualities in the students so that they will assume leadership position in the profession and society helping in developmental activities of health care and society.

Short Term Objectives

To promote students centered learning. To incorporate innovative teaching methodologies. To initiate carrier advancement training program for nurse. To develop online learning resources. To update teachers knowledge and skill to provide advanced learning facilities to the students.

To start collaborate program with other institution and agencies. To start inter disciplinary research activities. To initiate students/ faculty exchange program. To undertake research projects from international agencies. To develop online feedback mechanism.
